The One Health Summer School

The One Health Summer School is offered in collaboration between University of Copenhagen (UCPH) and Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and is part of the ‘Food Science Copenhagen (FoSCo)’ strategic collaboration, which promotes interdisciplinary scientific excellence in the field of health, food and veterinary science, and associated technical and life sciences.

The summer school is focusing on the One Health concept, which is a worldwide strategy for expanding interdisciplinary collaboration and communication in many aspects of healthcare and protection of humans, animals and their shared environment. The summer school provides the participants with an in depth introduction to the One Health concept exemplified by current challenges of infectious diseases and zoonoses, drug resistance and chemical contaminants in food.


The summer school is open to Danish and International students with a completed BSc Degree. The programme is offered as a master’s course and is also open to PhD students and postgraduates. The language of instruction is English. A good command of English is therefore required.


28 April – 27 June 2014:  internet-based module running in a, which will only be open to participants in the course.
11-22 August 2014 (both days included): on-campus programme.


The first week will take place at DTU Campus, located 13 km north of Copenhagen and the second week at the Frederiksberg Campus of UCPH close to the city centre of Copenhagen.

Structure and teaching methods

The programme is designed to combine the best from e-learning with the best from on-campus learning. The summer school starts with a 9-week internet-based module (e-learning) in April-June 2014 followed by a two-week long on-campus programme in August. Teaching involves a combination of lectures, quizzes, exercises and group work. During the on campus part, mornings will be used for general introductions to One Health concepts and approaches focusing on generic models, e.g. disease surveillance, source identification, risk assessment, prevention and control models. Afternoons will mainly be spent working with case-based interdisciplinary group work about e.g. antimicrobial resistance, salmonella, influenza, mycotoxins and parasitic zoonoses and excursions. There will be many presenters and case-facilitators with expertise in a wide range of topics of relevance for One Health.

Credits and form of exam

A total of 5 ECTS credit points are awarded upon completion of the course. Form of exams: self-assessment of e-learning module, evaluation of oral presentation and discussion of case, Grading: Pass/Fail.

Organisers and lecturers mainly come from UCPH and DTU. There will also be speakers well-known in their fields from other research institutions and international organisations such as the EU Commission, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Course fee

External students and postgraduate participants, EU/EAA citizens:
EUR 500.  
Non- EU/EAA citizens: EUR 1140.

These costs cover participation in the full programme including both the e-learning and on-campus parts. It does not cover travel, housing and living expenses during the course. Full payment of course fees must be transferred before the start of the course. Payment details will be available upon acceptance.

Please note:  Exchange students from partner universities can participate in this course for free, if it is an integrated part of their study plan in Denmark and thus accepted by their home university. In other words, if you study in Denmark in the spring of 2014, you can follow the E-learning component starting in April 2014 and prolong your stay to participate in the on-campus component in August 2014  – or you can follow the E-learning component from home and arrive prior to your planned study period in the fall of 2014.  For further information on application and registration procedures please contact This email address is being protected from spambots.
